Hong Kong Kart Club Ltd.
History of HKKC

The Hong Kong Kart Club was incorporated on 9th October 1965.

Founder members are a group of motoring enthusiasts from different professions. Among them are civil servants, racing drivers, architects and company directors.  They are Mr. J. W. Bailey, Mr. Fu Yam Chi, Mr. Walter Haskamp, Mr. Michael D. Kadoorie, Mr. Kho Kiem An,

Mr. S. Y. S. Lee and Mr. D. J. H. MacDonald.

The Club was and still is recognized by FIA (Federation Internationale de         L’ Automobile) as the ASN (National Sports Association) by CIK, the controlling body in Karting within FIA.  At the time, when Hong Kong Motor Sports in general were under RAC in UK which in turn was and still is a member of FIA.  Then after July 1997, Hong Kong could only have one ASN which naturally and rightfully went to HKAA (Hong Kong Automobile Association).  However since Hong Kong Kart Club represented Hong Kong Karting for over 30 years as a member of FIA through CIK.  FIA decided to delegate the power of Karting in Hong Kong through HKAA. Upon such delegation, Hong Kong Kart Club thus assumes the official authority in Karting in Hong Kong.

Sekkong Period

At the early beginning, karting activities were confined only at the airstrip at Sekkong Army Camp. With the help of some British Military Personnel who were stationed at Hong Kong at that time, permission was granted that members of the Hong Kong Kart Club may use the airstrip to practice on one Sunday per month.

Truck loads of rubber cones, used motor car tyres, mills barriers etc. were transported to Sekkong early in the Sunday mornings to set up temporary tracks. After the day’s activities, the track was to be dismantled and cleared from the airstrip in the afternoon. Everybody present would put in their share of effort to build the track, which could be different ones of our design every month, that’s the good thing, but the only set back was that we could only have an oblong track of a quarter mile length.

Races organized and everything was taking shape and here came the Hong Kong International Kart Prix.

The 1st Hong Kong International Kart Prix was held on 17th – 18th June 1967 at the Sekkong Airstrip with a temporary circuit of 950 yds.

Winner of the event was a Hong Kong based pilot Steve Holland.

The 2nd Hong Kong International Kart Prix was held on 9th – 10th November 1968 at Victoria Park. This was the beginning of the famous Victoria Park Kart Prix. This temporary circuit was built on 4 foot ball pitches and 8 basketball courts, total length 660 yds.

Winner of the event was Micky Allen of Great Britain.

Karting activities just moved along in this trend from the 60’s to the end of 70’s. Hong Kong had by then become the leader in karting sport in South-East Asia.  Karters from the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand all came to Hong Kong to purchase their equipments.

The Victoria Park International Kart Prix had developed to become the most prestigious, and, with the sponsorship of Marlboro, the highest prize-money karting prix in the world, especially when such karting prix took place at the season end of world annual karting events, then most champions took the opportunities to complete in the fashion of unofficial world championship.  All participants looked forward to gathering, competing and exchanging experience, to improve friendship in true sportsmanship at the Victoria Park, the most unique track at the heart of Hong Kong.

In the meantime, the Hong Kong Kart Club is developing a project to build an international standard permanent kart track with all necessary supporting facilities. Unfortunately, the project underway for over two months was stopped by the Lands Department for that particular piece of land was designated for the future development of the electronic railway. There went the first kart track project.

Then came the day when we could no longer use the Sekkong Airstrip.  With the introduction of the more advanced air crafts to the Air Force of the British Army stationed at Hong Kong, the authorities of Sekkong Camp withdrew their approval for the Hong Kong Kart Club to use the Airstrip.  That was the end of our Sekkong Period.

Maipo and Lau Shui Heung Period

Luckily, when we lost the Sekkong venue, two private owned kart tracks materialized.

A Fanling resident built a 700 m. kart track at the Lau Shui Heung Village.

An enterprise built a 1200 m. track at Maipo.

Both kart tracks provided rental kart services.  This was the first time karting sport was opened to general public and attracted a large number of new comers to join the Hong Kong Kart Club. The Club had recorded the maximum of 120 entries at a single race day and pushed the achievement of the Club to its highest peak.

There is an old saying, “What goes up must comes down.”

Just when the Hong Kong Kart Club is enjoying its success, the Environmental Protection Department was formed at the end of the 80’s. Air and Noise Pollutions are the two deadly factors in karting sport. Furthermore, banning of tobacco products to sponsor sports activities was another big blow to our annually International Kart Prix. Finally in 1993, after 27 consecutive years, Hong Kong Kart Club organized the last International Kart Prix in Victoria Park and karting activities came to an abrupt halt in Hong Kong.  There was no other way for the Hong Kong karters to turn to but going up north to China.

Mr. M.K. Tan (Ex-Hon. Treasurer), Dr. Hou (Existing Chaiman), Mr. Frank Shum (Veteran member)

PRC Period

The first kart track developed in China was the Honey Lake Kart Track at Shenzhen. Because of its great success, kart tracks were built all over China though with varying and Hong Kong Kart Club took this opportunity to organize the HKKC Championship series using those kart tracks that were in good condition.

This situation carried on and we entered the new millennium.

The Tamar Event

In year 2000 the Hong Kong Kart Club tried to revive karting activites in Hong Kong. With the sponsorship of Ericsson mobile phone and the support of Sports Development Board and the Tourist Association, the Ericsson Kart Master Series was organized.

It was a Series of 3 Rounds: The 1st Round in Dong Guan, PRC, The 2nd Round in Shanghai, PRC and The Final Round in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Round was held at The Tamar. A temporary track of 700m. was erected with rubber cones, rubber tyres and mills barriers.

The 4-day event was a great success and thus re-kindled the Club’s hope to build a permanent track in Hong Kong. We approached the Government, Airport Authority, Sports Development Board and Tourist Commission for assistance but all efforts were in vain.

The Present Period - Diamond Coast International Kart Circuit

Then in 2004, a private enterprise approached the Club to express their intention of building a kart track in Lung Kwu Tan area. After a period of negotiation, agreement was reached that the enterprise would finance the building of the track and the Club would support them to obtain the necessary permits from the government.

In the middle of 2006, the construction of the track had come to the final stages. With the blessings of the Home Affairs Bureau and Leisure and Cultural Services Department, permits and waivers were obtained from various government departments, and under the supervision of the Hong Kong Kart Club, the Diamond Coast International Circuit was finally in operation.

The Hong Kong Kart Club organized their first race at the end of year 2006 and started their 2007 HKKC Championships in April 2007.

We hope the karting sport in Hong Kong will prosper through Government and public support and Hong Kong Kart Club will be able to organize International Standard Events in the near future to regain the prestige, recognition and status as the world’s best.

Mr. J. W. BaileyMr. Walter HaskampMr. Michael D. Kadoorie Mr. D. J. H. MacDonald.

Steve Holland

Micky Allen
